Where we are Based

The Maritime Centre based at the School of Law, University of Nairobi, is a centre of excellence in research, capacity development, training, knowledge management and dissemination in both the academic and policy arena.

When Established?

It was established in fulfilment of one of the key commitments made by the Government of Kenya at the SBEC 2018 on behalf of the University of Nairobi.

Who we are

The Maritime Centre incorporates the Fishforce Academy, a Fisheries Crime Law Enforcement Academy, which was established by the University of Nairobi in collaboration with Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 2016. The purpose of the FishForce Academy is to build capacity by offering short learning programmes and training to law enforcement officers involved in fisheries crime. The Maritime Centre undertakes research on all aspects of blue economy including fisheries crime (especially illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing)which negatively impacts on marine resources.

Our Operations

The Maritime Centre is designed to operate in a cross- and multi –disciplinary manner. The Centre is committed to scholarly excellence and has adequate technical and human resource capabilities. In particular, it has access to leading academic and research capabilities, including senior academics, fellows and associates, and postgraduate students.

Our Competency

The mix of competencies among the team from within and without the University includes areas such as maritime law and policy, law of the sea, marine and coastal environment and natural resources, marine sciences, economics, planning, policy development and analysis, maritime industry and blue economy sector-specific expertise.

Our Collaborations

Further, the Maritime Centre works in collaboration with other agencies/institutions in enhancing its own capacity, developing capacity building programmes, research, and providing a platform for information sharing and exchange of ideas on all aspects of the ocean and its sustainable use.
